Liz Myhill

Liz Myhill RSW is a Scottish artist whose observational works are gathered through working ‘en plein air’ directly from life. A deep-rooted connection to her native Isle of Skye and the rugged landscape of the Highlands and Islands continues to shape her life and work, providing a wealth of inspiration. The act of walking, watching and recording, whether fleeting or through lengthy study, allows Liz to forge a connection with her subjects and evoke a sense of place. Although field works are often an end in themselves, some are also developed into studio paintings and printmaking.

Liz studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee and has since exhibited her work throughout the UK, regularly showing with societies such as the Royal Scottish Academy and Society of Wildlife Artists. She has received a number of awards including an international Elizabeth Greenshield Foundation Award and most recently in 2021 the Swarovski Optik & Birdwatch Artist of the Year Award at The Natural Eye exhibition in London. In 2017 she was elected a professional member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.

“Working in the field is to be completely immersed in time and place. There is something about the immediacy of working outdoors that I find irresistible, the urgency to capture fleeting effects of light and weather or observing the wildlife that inhabits these places. Working in the field is almost a moving meditation of total absorption and becoming in tune with my surroundings. Many of my favourite locations are those I return to time and time again, finding that they continue to reveal new aspects of their character and becoming known to me like old friends.”
