Joseph Loganbill
Having established his painting career in America, Joseph emigrated to Scotland in 2019. Along with raising three girls on Kintyre, he’s dedicated himself to studying and painting coastal scenes of his adopted home. ‘This year I’m delighted to be applying for my UK citizenship and to have added Saltwater to galleries in Edinburgh, Campbeltown, and Tarbert.
‘After studying art at Bethel College (Kansas) and the Wichita Center for the Arts, I began looking for teachers to extend my studies. From intensive workshops with David Leffel, Sherrie McGraw, Ray Roberts, and Jeff Legg — I owe all of them a great deal in furthering my painting development.’
All of my teachers emphasised studying how light operates over and around objects in space as foundational in painting. So when I’m out working en plein air (my favourite way to find and begin new subjects), I try to keep those lessons in mind as the light often swiftly changes.
‘I’m sometimes asked for comparisons of painting the prairie scenes of my native Kansas to Scotland and whether I miss it. In one way the expansive skies and long horizons there have some similarities to the reach of the sea here. But the colours of the sea itself here in Scotland are so spectacular. As a lover of water, I’m constantly moved to try to interpret all those seaside moods in paint.’
‘With a depth of history in architecture and diversity in rugged terrain and seascape, Scotland is really unmatched in painting topics I feel so blessed to explore and Arran exemplifies all of this.’
